Under the banner of “Ishwardi Nagrik Raksha Andolan” citizens of Ishwardi Municipality organised a human chains and memorandums protesting against fraud and illegal extortion which cause sufferings to the peole in service delivery of the municipality.
The human chain programme was held at Gate No. 1 of Ishwardi Bazar on Thirsday and later the memorandum was issued. Citizens of various professions including businessmen, rickshaw pullers, students participated in the programme.
At the end of the human chain, the agitators presented a memorandum containing 14-point demands signed by the residents of the municipality to the advisor of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives through the newly appointed administrator and upazila executive officer Subir Kumar Das.
The angry citizens spoke about excessive holding tax increase of the municipality in previous years, collection of money from citizens without receipt for providing holding number twice in three years, taking bribe for issuing birth certificate, waterlogging, uncleanliness, dilapidated roads etc. It is demanded to stop corruption and looting and bring the Ishwardi Municipality under accountability and make it citizen friendly. Sultan Mahmud Khan Bidyut of “Ishwardi Nagrik Odhikar Raksha Andolan” said, we have delivered the copy of the memorandum to the Municipal Administrator as well as Pabna District Commissioner’s office and Deputy Director’s office of Pabna Branch of Local Government Department.
Municipal Administrator and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Subir Kumar Das said, I have taken a three-month action plan subject to discussion after assuming responsibility. After which everyone will be informed through a press conference. I will try to provide the best service to the citizens based on the demands expressed through the memorandum.
Meanwhile, the new municipal administrator inspected the drainage and sewage disposal systems in different areas of the municipality on Friday morning.
