Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan of the Department of Development Studies is set to be appointed as the 30th Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU). The Education Ministry is expected to issue a notification regarding the appointment today, according to sources.
Prof. Khan has been serving as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) since August 15 of this year, following a student-led revolution. Prior to this, he was the Pro Vice-Chancellor of IUB. He has also served as the Chair of the Development Studies Department at Dhaka University.
His career includes roles as Senior Academic Adviser at the National Defence College (NDC) and at the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development. He has pursued higher education and research at the University of Oxford, the University of Wales Swansea, and the Asian Institute of Technology. His extensive academic and practical experience spans Bangladesh, Thailand, and the UK.
Prof. Khan completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Public Administration from Chittagong University and earned his Ph.D. in Development Studies from the University of Wales, Swansea. He has published extensively on topics such as environment, natural resource management, and social/community development.
Prof. Maksud Kamal, the 29th Vice-Chancellor of DU, resigned from his position on August 10 due to personal reasons. His tenure was marked by controversy, particularly regarding his handling of the recent quota reform movement. Critics have noted that he failed to protect students and used law enforcement to clear the halls and campus.
