Mirza Abbas, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, stated on Friday that the government’s recent hike in oil prices will lead to an increase in the prices of all commodities.
“Raising oil prices means increasing the cost of everything. The government has caused commodity prices to rise by increasing oil prices once again,” he said during a mass prayer program at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital.
“I saw in the newspaper that the price of fuel has been increased by Tk 2.5 per liter… this hike comes at a time when people are already struggling with rising prices of all commodities,” he noted.
The BNP leader expressed concern that the increase in fuel prices will further elevate the cost of commodities. “When the price of electricity and fuel rises, it severely affects the lives and livelihoods of people,” he said.
Mirza Abbas accused the Awami League (AL) government of turning the country into a “bottomless basket” again through widespread corruption and plundering. “Many people get goosebumps hearing the name of Ziaur Rahman because he accomplished what the AL was supposed to do,” he stated.
He asserted that the late President Ziaur Rahman had lifted the country from the state of a bottomless basket during his brief tenure of just three and a half years. “This government has made Bangladesh bottomless again,” he remarked.
The Dhaka South City unit BNP organized the event on the road in front of the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the afternoon, seeking the salvation of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and marking his 43rd death anniversary.
Leaders, activists, and supporters of the BNP from different wards of Dhaka South City participated in the prayers. They also offered a munajat, praying for the eternal peace of Zia’s departed soul and the good health of party chief Khaleda Zia.
Mirza Abbas claimed that the ruling party has placed the country’s people in a dire situation by establishing a reign of terror. “We used to hear that Bargis would come to the country and flee with looted goods and assets. Now, the new Bargis (AL) are in power. They don’t leave the country after plundering; instead, they smuggle the wealth and money out of the country,” he said.
