The price of essential commodities in Bagerhat district town kitchen market has gone beyond the purchasing capacity of the people in general and limited income group people in particular putting them into severe hardship in maintain of on normal life meeting basic demands.
In the market there are not a single vegetables excepting papaya getting below Tk. 80 while papaya is being sold at Tk.40 per kg.
Daily necessary items price hike is forcing consumers to cut back on purchases as they feel exhausted with their poor income.
While visiting the main market of the district town on Sunday (Aug. 17) it was found that most vegetable prices were up by Tk.20 to Tk.40 or more.
Good quality round brinjal (egg vegetables) topped the list, selling from Tk.210 to Tk.240 per kg-double than last week’s price Tk.150 -170.
Ridge gourd (Jhinga), sponge gourd (Dhundol) and cucumber were priced at Tk.90 per kg. Lady’s fingers (Dheras) and teased gourd (Kakrol) at Tk.80 or more per kg.
Jali Kumra is being sold from Tk.100-120 per piece and bottle gourd Tk.100-140. Yard-long beans (Barbati) at Tk.80-100 per Kg, taro stems at Tk.80 and taro roots at Tk.70-80.
Green chilli prices also spiked and it is now being sold at Tk.200 or more per kg.
Brinjal prices shocked buyers, it was told a buyer-it’s up Tk.100 in just a week.
The price hike is not limited to vegetables. The price of onion, a must item for Bengali kitchen has also shot up by Tk.20 per kg and it is now being sold at Tk.85 or more per kg per kg as against of Tk.55 in the last week.
The egg prices rose as well, with brown eggs are selling at Tk.145-150 per dozen while white eggs are selling at Tk.130 -135 each dozen.
Prices of both Sonali and farm chicken climbed by Tk.10 per kg and they are being sold at Tk.320 -340 and Tk.180-225 per kg respectively. Beef prices remained still at Tk.750-800 while mutton is being sold here at Tk.1,100- 1,200 respectively.
