NN Online:

The use of posters in the upcoming national election will not be allowed, the Election Commission (EC) has announced as part of its draft code of conduct aimed at ensuring fair campaigning.

However, leaflets will still be permitted for electioneering, subject to restrictions, Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar said on Monday following a meeting at the EC headquarters in Agargaon.

“The reform commission proposed this ban on posters, and we think it’s a good idea,” said the commissioner, adding that the EC is also focusing on social media campaigns and measures to curb misinformation.

The draft conduct rules also include a ban on polythene-coated leaflets, plastic banners, and the use of vehicles like trucks, buses, motorcycles, or trains for campaign rallies. Torch processions and public showdowns, including at the time of nomination submission, will also be prohibited.

The EC is considering stricter penalties for violations, including increasing fines beyond the current Tk 200–500 range and enforcing provisions from the penal code.

The final draft of the code will soon be presented to the Election Commission for approval.
