Postal dept opposes GPO transfer plan
News Desk :
Recently, a letter from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works was submitted to the Chief Adviser, falsely claiming that the GPO Building is “abandoned and unused.” The letter further suggests that the GPO is an extension of the Bangladesh Secretariat and proposes its inclusion in the Secretariat’s Master Plan for transfer. We strongly assert that this information is entirely false, misleading, and deliberate in nature.
The GPO Compound is a Key Point Installation (KPI) declared by the government. Currently, 24 operational offices of the Postal Department are actively functioning within this compound, serving thousands of citizens every day. It is a vital center for providing uninterrupted services to postal officers and employees. The GPO Compound has never been abandoned, nor will it ever be as long as the postal service continues to exist.
Although the office of the Director General of the Postal Department has been relocated to the Postal Building in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, all other operational offices continue to function from the GPO Compound as before.
We express our deep concern and strong condemnation over the issuance of such a letter without consulting the Postal Department, and for presenting it to the Chief Advisor without our input. In response, all officers and employees of the Postal Department in Dhaka have gathered at the GPO Bhaban on Sunday to protest this unjust and baseless proposal.
The GPO Bhaban is not merely a building—it is the lifeline for approximately 40,000 officers and employees of the Postal Department. It stands as a proud symbol of their heritage and service. Any attempt to take over this building through deceitful means is considered a direct attack on the country’s postal service.
Postal Department officers and employees at all levels firmly demand the immediate withdrawal of this proposal. Furthermore, we urge that no decisions of this nature be made in the future without full consultation and agreement from the Postal Department.
