Voting in the 50 parliamentary reserved seats for women will be held on March 29.
The Election Commission on Sunday declared the election schedule fixing the deadline for the submission of nomination papers on March 4. Besides, the last date for scrutiny of nomination papers on March 6 and the withdrawal of candidature by March 12.
“The Awami League [AL]-led six-party alliance will contest in 41 seats. Besides, the Jatiya Party [JP] can take part in six seats and the coalition of independent candidates in three seats,” Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, Chief Election Commissioner, said on Sunday.
As per electoral rules, the number of reserved seats is allocated among the political parties and the alliance as per the proportion of their representation to parliament.
In this regard, AL has formed an alliance with five parties ahead of elections to reserved seats for women and planned to contest in 41 out of 50 reserved seats for women in the national parliament.
Apart from it, the main opposition JP will be allotted six women seats against its 34 general seats. Besides, the group of 16 independent MPs will be allotted three women seats against their total seats.
Earlier on February 8, a list of 247 MPs of the six-party alliance, who will vote the MPs of reserved seats, was submitted to the EC Secretary.
In the list, the AL gave names of 231 MPs, six names came from Workers Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal [JSD] gave name of five lawmakers and two each from Jatiya Party [JP] and Tariqat Federation. Besides, single one came from Bangladesh Nationalist Front [BNF].
Meanwhile, several women leaders have alleged that the Election Commission [EC] has delayed to announce the schedule for the election of 50 women reserved seats, for which, the joining of new women MPs in the
current session of 10th parliament becomes uncertain.
They said that the ruling Awami League [AL] is also taking time to prepare the list of its women nominees in reserved seats. Now, the AL is likely to announce the list of women after EC’s announcement.
Party sources said the AL is taking time to prepare its list of nominees to avoid confusion among the alliance leaders while the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken decision to introduce new faces in the parliament.
