‘Political turmoil if elections not held by February’

Veteran freedom fighter and president of the Krishak Sramik Janata League, Bongobir Abdul Kader Siddique, (Bir Uttam), has warned that if national elections are not held by February 2026, the country could descend into a situation “worse than the current autocratic rule of the Awami League.”
Addressing a rally marking the historic Makrai Day on Saturday afternoon at Ghatail, Siddique issued a stern caution to the opposition BNP as well. “If you repeat in 16 months what the Awami League did in 16 years, the people will turn their backs on you immediately,” he said.
The event was held at Makrai, a site of historical significance from the 1971 Liberation War, and organized by the Kaderia Bahini freedom fighters. The rally was presided over by Bir Muktijoddha Fazlur Haque (Bir Protik).
Speaking at the same event, former minister Abdul Latif Siddique remarked, “We won the Liberation War in 1971, but we failed to deliver happiness to our people.
Another war is looming-not of weapons, but of ideology and conscience. We must win this new war.”
Makrai is remembered for a direct battle during the war between the Pakistan Army and the Kaderia Bahini. During the clash, Kader Siddique was wounded, and a freedom fighter named Hathem was martyred.
Since then, August 16 has been observed annually as Makrai Day by the Kaderia Bahini to honor the sacrifices made during the Liberation War.
