The vehicular movements at Zero Point intersection and surrounding areas in Dhaka city came to a standstill on Sunday due to rallies and processions by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and other allied groups.
The demonstrations have caused severe traffic congestion, leaving commuters stranded for hours in long tailbacks on most connecting roads in the area.
Traffic reportedly came to a complete halt around 11:30am as protesters intensified their presence at the intersection.
Witnesses reported near-standstill traffic in areas leading to Old Dhaka, particularly on roads in Bangshal and Nawabpur, which caused further slowdowns near the GPO, Secretariat, and Jatiya Press Club.
Traffic police have been working to divert vehicles and ease congestion in the surrounding roads.
“Traffic jams are common here, but on Sunday’s congestion is particularly severe,” said a traffic police officer on duty in the area.
