Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, said on Wednesday that there is unanimous agreement among political parties regarding the restoration of the caretaker government system.

“There’s a clear and specific consensus on reinstating the caretaker government,” he told reporters at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka after the eighth day of the Commission’s second-phase dialogue with political parties.

Riaz noted that significant progress was made through open discussions on the formation, structure, and jurisdiction of the caretaker government. Electoral boundary delimitation was also addressed, where a notable consensus emerged.

As an immediate step, an expert committee will be formed—or revised if already established—with support from the Election Commission to re-demarcate constituencies for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

For long-term measures, Riaz said a provision will be added to Article 119(1)(g) of the Constitution to mandate forming an expert committee by law to revise parliamentary constituencies after every census or within 10 years. Amendments to Section 8(3) of the National Parliament (Constituency Demarcation) Act, 2021 (revised in 2025), will define this committee’s structure and duties.

Thirty political parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, CPB, NCP, and AB Party, participated in Wednesday’s dialogue. Several commission members also attended the session.
