Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen has warned that a disturbing change in power relations-where bureaucrats increasingly seek patronage from politicians-poses a grave risk to the country’s system of governance.

“In the past, politicians would approach bureaucrats. Now the situation has reversed. Bureaucrats are going to politicians and declaring, ‘I am your man,'” he said while speaking at the inauguration of the Citizen Platform’s Reform Tracker in the capital on Sunday. “This trend is a serious threat to state governance.”

The ACC chairman also pointed out that the absence of clearly defined limits on the authority and responsibilities of members of parliament is creating scope for misconduct.

“The roles and responsibilities of MPs must be clearly specified. When an MP is granted unchecked authority, irregularities become unavoidable,” he said.

Expressing concern over the erosion of the traditional balance between politicians and civil servants, Momen stressed that administrative neutrality is essential. “Once impartiality is compromised, state accountability breaks down, ultimately weakening good governance,” he warned.

He further cautioned against the misuse of judicial independence as a means of exercising unchecked power.

“Corruption can only be restrained by maintaining a balance of power, clearly defined responsibilities, and strong accountability mechanisms,” he added.
