Staff Reporter :
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has unearthed a sprawling network of fake certificate production, allegedly involving senior officials within the Technical Education Board, journalists, and even Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) personnel.

DMP Additional Commissioner (DB Chief) Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid disclosed these details in a press conference held on Saturday.

Harun identified the central figure as AKM Shamsuzzaman, a senior system analyst at the Technical Education Board. Shamsuzzaman, currently in police remand, reportedly confessed to issuing fake certificates to over 5,000 individuals, including board employees.

Crucially, Shamsuzzaman provided details crucial to identifying and canceling these fraudulent certificates. “We will prepare a list based on his information and submit it to the board for certificate cancellation,” Harun stated. The DB chief further announced plans to involve experts from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to refine the identification process.

Shamsuzzaman’s confession implicated senior journalists and ACC officials in the racket. Harun revealed that Shamsuzzaman claimed to have financially appeased these individuals to ensure smooth operation.

Addressing the media’s inquiries regarding action against journalists, Harun emphasized transparency. He described Shamsuzzaman receiving “Eid bonus” requests from journalists while in remand, prompting further investigation. “The DB will facilitate a face-to-face meeting between Shamsuzzaman and any journalist seeking clarification,” Harun said.

Similarly, Harun acknowledged communication with senior ACC officials regarding the implicated personnel. He confirmed the formation of a three-member probe committee within the ACC and pledged to provide access to Shamsuzzaman for their investigation.

“We are committed to a fair and thorough investigation,” Harun declared. “No one will be unfairly harassed. Everyone will be given the opportunity to respond to the information provided by Shamsuzzaman.”
