The police are set to launch a countrywide crackdown on individuals involved in vandalizing outlets of KFC, Bata, Pizza Hut, and other businesses during recent protests in various districts, including Bogra, Sylhet, and Cox’s Bazar.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Monday said law enforcers have obtained video footage of the attackers. “They are being identified and will be arrested immediately. Police teams are currently working on this,” the IGP was quoted as saying by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
The demonstrations, held in protest against Israeli actions in Gaza, turned violent in several areas as mobs targeted businesses perceived to be linked with Israel. The attacks came amid widespread calls to boycott Israeli-affiliated products.
“The government does not impede any lawful protests. However, we will not tolerate any criminal acts under the guise of protest,” IGP Baharul warned.
Reacting to the incidents, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun expressed concern over the economic fallout.
“At a time when we are hosting a summit to showcase Bangladesh as an investment destination, it is unfortunate to see our countrymen setting such deplorable examples,” he said.
Highlighting the broader impact, he added: “Many of these businesses were owned by local investors, and some by foreigners who believed in Bangladesh. They created jobs for our youth. Those involved in these heinous acts are enemies of employment, economic growth, and stability.”
The authorities have urged the public to remain calm and maintain law and order while continuing to express their concerns through peaceful and lawful means.
