July Uprising Murder Case: Police seek discharge of Iresh Zaker

The police have submitted an interim report to the court requesting the discharge of actor Iresh Zaker from the murder case of BNP activist Mahfuz Alam, who was shot dead in capital’s Mirpur during last year’s July Uprising.

Inspector Sajjad Roman, the investigation officer of the case from Mirpur Model Police Station, submitted the report before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on 9 October.
Sources sad that police have also sought the discharge of Forethought PR Managing Director Ikram Moin Chowdhury in the same case.

According to the interim report, neither Iresh Zaker nor Ikram Moin Chowdhury were present at the scene. Police found no photos or video footage showing them at the shooting site.

If any document or factual evidence emerges in the future linking the accused to the case, legal action will be initiated in accordance with the law, said the report.

Mahfuz was shot dead in Mirpur on 5 August last year during the mass uprising. His brother, Mostafizur Rahman, filed the murder case on 20 April this year, naming Iresh Zaker among other accused.

The case against Iresh also named over 400 others, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, including former politicians, police officials, celebrities, business persons and celebrities.
The murder case against Iresh Zaker caused uproar across the country, with many saying such a case was akin to mockery of the justice system.
