Police ready to tackle election challenges: IGP

The upcoming election poses a significant challenge for the Bangladesh Police, but the force is fully capable of meeting it, said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) during his address at a special crime review meeting held at the Hall of Pride, Police Headquarters, on Monday.
The IGP described the election as an opportunity to improve the police’s public image, which has previously been affected by negative perceptions related to elections. He urged all personnel to work towards regaining public trust.
The meeting was attended by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman, SB Chief Md. Golam Rasul, Additional IGPs, heads of various Dhaka Police units, all police commissioners, and range DIs, with district police superintendents participating virtually.
Additional IG (Crime and Operations) Khondaker Rafiqul Islam presented an overview of the country’s law and order and crime situation.
The IGP instructed the police to intensify efforts to recover looted weapons ahead of the elections, collect intelligence, and publicize the Ministry of Home Affairs’ reward for weapon recovery.
He also called for rigorous implementation of ongoing election training programs.
He directed district superintendents to ensure timely issuance of police clearance certificates without harassment and urged field officers to file complaints with the Missing Persons Commission as required.
Special emphasis was placed on investigating cases related to the anti-discrimination movement and improving overall case investigation quality.
During the meeting, officers and district superintendents engaged with the IGP online, exchanging views on various administrative and operational matters.
