Sylhet Bureau :
The ‘Citizen Solidarity’ event, organized by leftist parties and organizations in Sylhet to demand the release of BSAD leaders Abu Jafar, Pranab Jyoti Pal and others arrested in false cases, was disrupted by police.
On Saturday (October 4) at 3:30 pm, the police obstructed the rally in front of the Sylhet Shaheed Minar in a very undemocratic manner before it began. The microphone of the event was turned off.
The rally, chaired by senior Sylhet politician Advocate Bedananda Bhattacharya, former joint general secretary of the Sylhet Bar Association Advocate Humayun Rashid Sueb, architect Rajan Das, prominent cultural figure Nilanjan Das Tuku, leader of the Professional Forum Abdul Wadud, theater director Nahid Parvez Babu, leader of the Democratic Bar Association Mohammad Monir Uddin, CPB Sylhet District President Syed Farhad Hossain, General Secretary Khairul Hasan, Revolutionary Communist Party Secretary Siraj Ahmed, Bangladesh Communist Movement Sylhet District Coordinator Mahitosh Deb Malay, BSD (Marxist) and Left Democratic Alliance Sylhet District Coordinator Sanjay Kanta Das, BSD Sylhet District Member Naziqul Islam Rana, CPB Sylhet District Leader Advocate Anwar Hossain Sumon, Bangladesh Communist Movement Sylhet District Member Advocate Ronen Sarkar Roni, Income Tax Lawyer Mukhlesur Rahman, Convener of Samajtantrik Mohila Forum Machuma Khanam, Malay Chakraborty of Charan Cultural Center, President of Bangladesh Chhatra Union Sylhet District Manisha Wahid, President of Democratic Chhatra Council Sylhet City Branch Tanjina Begum, General Secretary of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Sylhet District Bushra Suhel, among others attend the rally.
.
Protest processions and rallies were immediately held as the solidarity rally was disrupted due to police obstruction.
The procession started from Shaheed Minar and ended at Surma Point. Sanjay Kanta Das, Coordinator of Left Democratic Alliance and BSD (Marxist) Sylhet District, addressed the short rally led by Naziqul Islam Rana.
At that time, the speakers strongly condemned the undemocratic behavior of the police. They said, ‘This kind of behavior of the police in a simple program like civic solidarity has shocked us. Even after the July uprising, the police intervention in the meeting reminds us of the fascist Hasina era. Less than a year after the mass uprising, police interference in meetings and rallies is taking away freedom of expression. This behavior of the police and the arrest of leaders in false and harassing cases prove that the current government and administration are walking on the same path as before. We demand the immediate release of the leaders and withdrawal of the false cases.
