Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday sought support of the Norwegian private sector companies fordeveloping and expanding the country’s acquaculture.
“We seek support of Norway in developing our aquaculture,” she said when Norwegian ambassador to Dhaka Merete Lundemo paid a farewell call on her at her office. Sheikh Hasina sought the support of Norway in developing the country’s fisheries sector with Norwegian technology, projects and ventures in breeding fingerling development, fisheries management, and taking up joint ventures in marine aquaculture projects in Bangladesh coast. PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s progress in the ship building and ship recycling sector, Sheikh Hasina said that her government would set up a new shipyard in southern part of the country. “Norway can come up and build their own shipyard there as we can provide them with land,”. In this connection, the Norwegian ambassador lauded the progress of Bangladesh’s ship building industry saying that two of their ships are being built in Chittagong while negotiation is on to build four more ships. The ambassador also expressed her country’s interest to make more investment in Bangladesh especially in the health, telecom and ship building sector.
Extending her thanks to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the steps taken after the recent terrorist attack in the country, Merete said that some 77 people, most of them children, were killed in such kind of similar attack in Norway five years back. In this connection, the Norwegian ambassador said, “Norway will always stay beside Bangladesh in its fight against terrorism,” PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum was present on the occasion.
