Crime incidents, including murders, snatching, robbery, ransom, drugs, human trafficking, gambling, and other new forms of various crimes, have been rising at an alarming rate across the country recently.
Sources indicate that with technological advancements, novel types of crime are emerging daily, with many young people becoming targets and experiencing moral degradation.
The spread of teen gang culture, particularly around the capital, has become a major concern for Bangladesh, representing one of the most significant crimes committed by teenagers.
Addressing this issue, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina highlighted that the advent of advanced technology is leading to the emergence of new crimes, urging police personnel to prepare adequately to combat these diversified crimes. She made these remarks while speaking to senior police officers at the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday.
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s vigilance regarding the police’s capability to handle such situations.
“If the system for dealing with crime is ineffective, then controlling it becomes challenging,” she stated, adding that the police force must be ready to tackle these crimes effectively.
She praised the police force, noting, “Our police force is now seen as a friend of the people.” According to her, the public’s fear of the police has transformed into confidence in the law enforcement agency.
“The police have regained the trust of the people through their actions, earning them a reputation as trustworthy friends,” she added.
In a related statement, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun remarked that drugs, terrorism, and militancy have no place in the envisioned ‘Sonar Bengal’ of Bangabandhu or the ‘Smart Bangladesh’ as declared by the Prime Minister.
He advocated for establishing the police as a technology-based, people-oriented, service-oriented, and people-friendly force, emphasizing the goal to transform police stations into centers of trust, confidence, and service for the public.
IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun expressed these views during the second day of police week at Rajarbagh in the capital on Wednesday morning.
