Pledge to boycott polythene

The pledge to boycott polythene was taken at the Khulna District Bar Association auditorium on Saturday at 11 am.

The event was organized by the Democratic Rights Protection Forum, Khulna. This is the first ever event in Khulna.

Advocate Abdullah Hossain Bachchu, convener of Khulna District Bar Association, was the chief guest.

Advocate Khan Moniruzzaman, convener of the organization and president of the Income Tax Bar Association, presided over the event. Former Chief Medical Officer of Khubi Dr. AKM Kamrul Islam was the special guest.

Speeches were made by Executive Committee Member Secretary Kazi Motahar Rahman Babu, Member Advocate Md. Mominul Islam, Sardar Abu Taher. Advocate Md. Jobair Sheikh presented the event.

Citing research by Khulna University, the meeting said that microplastics have been found in 17 species of fish and three species of sailfish in the three main rivers of the Sundarbans. Even pieces of polythene have been found in the stomachs of fish in the forest.

The surface is continuously heating up due to the chemical toxicity of polythene, which is causing earthquakes and lightning strikes. 24,000 metric tons of polythene waste are being produced in the country every day.

Polythene is mixing with the soil and destroying the quality and fertility of the soil. It is causing waterlogging and reducing the navigability of the river.

The meeting said that a research report by the US-based scientific journal Water, Air Soil Pollution said that micro plastic particles have been found in the stomachs of hilsa in Bangladesh. Which poses a risk of cancer.

It was mentioned in the meeting that the use of plastic by 2060 may triple. The amount of plastic waste in soil and water will increase by 50 percent in 2040.

It is worth noting that the members of the said organization have taken an oath to boycott polythene and advised their neighbors and relatives not to use polythene.

He urged the Department of Environment to stop production, sale and marketing.

He stressed the need to implement the 1995 Environmental Protection Act. Only then will the future generation get a livable Khulna city.

The convener of the District Bar Association promised that more than a hundred lawyers would take an oath to boycott polythene this month.
