Pintu laid to rest

Former MP and BNP assistant organising secretary Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu was laid to rest at Azimpur Graveyard on Monday. He was buried in his late father Nizamuddin Ahmed’s grave around 6:45pm after his third and final namaj-e-janaza at Hazaribagh Leather Technology College ground after Asr prayers. Family members, locals and BNP leaders and activists joined the burial of Pintu, also a former president of BNP’s student body Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. Pintu, a convict in DBR carnage case, died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on Sunday afternoon. Assistant sub-inspector of RMCH police box Chanchal said Pintu was taken to the RMCH at noon after he complained of chest pain and breathed his last at the hospital around 12:20 pm. However, Dr Rais Uddin, head of RMCH cardiology department, said Pintu died of cardiac arrest before he was taken to the hospital. BNP and Pintu’s family alleged that he was killed in a planned way. Pintu’s brother Nasim Ahmed Rintu received Pintu’s body from forensic department of the RMCH around 11pm on Sunday night. Later, the BNP leader’s first namaj-e-janaza was held on the Hetemkhan Baro Mosque premises in Rajshahi joined by local BNP leaders and activists. The ambulance carrying Pintu’s body reached his Hazaribagh residence around 5:50am. From his residence, Pintu’s body was brought to Nayaplatan around 10:50am. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia reached Nayaplatan around 11:38am and placed wreaths along with her party’s leaders and activists on Pintu’s coffin. After showing her respect, a tearful Khaleda stood in solemn for some time beside the coffin. She had a last glimpse of the deceased and she herself covered the coffin with a flag of her party. Leaders and activists of BNP and its different front organisatins, wearing black badges, also paid their respect to Pintu by placing wreaths separately. A munajat was also offered seeking salvation of the departed soul.–UNB, Dhaka.
