‘People won’t accept any plot to derail election’

Staff Reporter :

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday warned that the people will not tolerate any conspiracy aimed at derailing the election process “Certain quarters are trying to create instability in the country. They want to foil or delay the election. But the people will not accept such attempts. We earned our independence through immense sacrifice, defeating fascism. Now we have a chance to restore democracy – we cannot allow anyone’s conspiracy to destroy this opportunity,” he said.

Fakhrul made these remarks while addressing a commemorative meeting at the Jashore Town Hall ground marking the seventh death anniversary of Tariqul Islam, former BNP standing committee member and minister.

Referring to the role of political parties, the BNP leader said, “We have acted with utmost responsibility. Despite many provocations, we have not yet taken to the streets. Remember, BNP is not a party that appeared overnight – it is a party built by the people of this land.”

“The national referendum must be held simultaneously with the parliamentary election. On this issue, our position is clear – no referendum will be allowed before the national polls,” he added.
Urging other political parties to act responsibly, Fakhrul said, “I call upon all political parties – do not create confusion or push the country toward instability. Do not bring suffering upon the people. We have endured countless struggles and sacrifices. Around 60 lakh of our leaders and activists are facing cases, and 20,000 have lost their lives. You are trying to start afresh to gain political mileage, but the people of this country will never accept it.”

Meanwhile, the BNP Secretary on Wednesday strongly condemned the armed attack on the party’s Chattogram-8 candidate, Ershad Ullah, describing it as a deliberate attempt to incite unrest and derail the upcoming 13th national election.
In a statement, he demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and exemplary punishment for those involved.
“These incidents are being orchestrated to put the current interim government in a difficult position and to obstruct the forthcoming national polls,” Fakhrul said.
He stressed that such criminal elements must be confronted with firmness and decisive action.
Fakhrul said Ershad Ullah suffered bullet injuries while campaigning in the afternoon and was later admitted to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram.
Expressing deep concern and outrage, Fakhrul termed the assault a “barbaric and inhuman act” carried out by miscreants.

“After the downfall of the autocratic Awami regime through the student-led mass movement, some quarters are again trying to create disorder and instability in the country for their own benefit,” he said.
