People want election first to save country: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the people are eager for an election to rescue the country, but certain vested quarters are trying to delay the polls by mounting pressure on the government with various demands.

“People want an election to save the nation. Yet, some political groups are conspiring to postpone it. The Proportional Representation (PR) system is something the public neither understands nor demands. Once the election is held and a new government takes office, all other matters can be discussed in parliament,” Fakhrul said.

He made the remarks while exchanging views at Danarhat Eidgah ground under Begunbari Union in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.

Recalling BNP’s earlier efforts to send Begum Khaleda Zia abroad for treatment during what he called the “fascist Awami League regime,” Fakhrul said, “We had appealed to the previous government to allow her medical treatment abroad. But Sheikh Hasina had threatened to throw her off the Padma Bridge. BNP seeks to win people’s hearts-not to take revenge.”

He added, “There was never a fair election under the previous fascist regime. None of us could vote or sleep peacefully then. At least now, we can sleep without fear.”

Pointing to the development activities implemented during BNP’s tenure in Thakurgaon and across the country, Fakhrul once again urged people to vote for the paddy sheaf symbol.

The event was chaired by Begunbari Union BNP President S M Abul Kashem Azad, with BNP District President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poigam Ali, and teachers, students, political activists, and local residents in attendance.
