Chattogram Bureau :
World Stroke Day was celebrated by the Neurology Department of Chattogram Medical College (CMC) Hospital. The scientific seminar was held at Shaheed Shah Alam Bir Uttam Auditorium, CMC.
Organised under the slogan ‘Saving precious time,’ the main scientific article titled ‘What is innovation in stroke management’ was presented by the head professor of neurology department Md Hasanuzzaman. He said, “In case of stroke, patients must go to the stroke centre for treatment without delay because 1.9 million brain cells die every minute after a stroke. It causes permanent brain damage. Every two seconds a person suffers a stroke and every six seconds a patient dies worldwide. The number of stroke patients is also increasing with time. It becomes clear when we look at the statistics of the neurology ward of CMC. Strokes are increasing mainly due to changes in our lifestyle and uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure. Although stroke treatment is not 100 per cent curable, it is possible to stay healthy with regular exercise.” He further said that there are two types of stroke. Of these, 86 per cent are ischemic strokes and 14 per cent are hemorrhagic strokes. Ischemic stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted by a clot in a blood vessel. Hemorrhagic stroke is when a blood vessel in the brain bursts and bleeds.
“We also need to think about the rehabilitation process of stroke patients because stroke treatment is very long term. But now we have started modern treatment in our neurology ward. A stroke can be completely cured with thrombolytic therapy in our ward within 3 hours of the onset of stroke symptoms. All the therapies we have given so far have been 100 per cent successful. Patients are living healthy lives.”
