A new central executive committee has been formed for the 2025-2027 term of the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh, an organisation dedicated to advocating for passenger rights and road safety in the country.
Recently, in the 30th meeting of the organisation’s general council, the 11-member committee was formed with former Secretary of the Bangladesh Election Commission Mohammad Zakaria as chairman, Professor Mohammad Ruhul Amin of the Department of International Relations of Dhaka University as vice chairman, founder of the organisation Md Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury as secretary general, former executive director of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority retired additional secretary Syed Ahmed as organising secretary, and young entrepreneur Towhidul Haque Liton as joint secretary general.
The other members of the committee are young organiser Mahmudul Hasan Russell as finance secretary, Mohammad Alauddin Masud as publicity secretary, educationist Principal Riju Akter Chowdhury as office secretary, prominent businessman Mohammad Arif, Principal Rafika Afroz, and insurance personality Yasmin Akter Seema as members of this committee.
The meeting alleged that the registration of the Passenger Welfare Association was cancelled due to the revenge of the then road minister Obaidul Quader for raising voice against the chaotic road system of the country, the reckless increase in road accidents, mismanagement on the roads, and reckless corruption in various road projects during the previous government.
Gratitude was expressed to the chief adviser of the government and the concerned parties for starting the process of returning the registration of the Passenger Welfare Association again to protect the interests of the country’s passengers.
The meeting demanded that the representation of the passengers be ensured by amending the Road Transport Act, Shipping Act, and Railway Act, and that the opinions and participation of the Passenger Welfare Association be ensured at every level of determining the fares of public transport for the passengers, setting ceilings, and determining facilities.
