Sheikh Shaira Rahman, wife of Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho, and their younger daughter were prevented from flying to Thailand this afternoon, reportedly for medical treatment purposes.
The incident occurred at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 1:35 PM, when immigration officials stopped them from boarding Thai Airways flight TG-322.
Partho confirmed that his wife and daughter were informed by personnel from the Special Branch (SB) of police that they would not be allowed to travel abroad at this time. “There was no misbehavior,” Partho clarified while speaking to the media. “They were simply informed of the decision and returned home accordingly.”
Partho, a former member of parliament and now a practicing legal professional, stated, “I’m a man of law – that’s my profession. My family members will go abroad after obtaining the necessary permission.”
While no official reason has been provided for the travel restriction, it is widely believed that the decision is linked to Sheikh Shaira Rahman’s family ties. She is the daughter of Sheikh Helal, a cousin of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted earlier this year.
Since the departure of former President M Abdul Hamid, immigration controls at the airport have reportedly come under the direct supervision of the SB, marking a noticeable shift in procedures surrounding international travel for individuals with political or familial connections to past regimes.
No official statement has yet been issued by the immigration authorities or the Special Branch regarding the incident.
