The dam in Polder No. 31 of the Water Development Board in Bhagwatipur area of Surkhali union of Batiyaghata upazila is now risky. Residents of the river bank area are spending their days in fear of erosion.
The WAPDA road is in a risky condition as the water level in the Manga river has increased comparatively more than normal since the last monsoon season.
The new dam built by volunteers could break at any moment. Locals fear that 12 villages will be flooded if the dam breaks.
The villages at risk of damage are Raipur, Bunarabad, Bhagwatipur, Pasarmari, Sankemari, Takimari, Surkhali, Kalyansri, Gaoghara, Kharial, Goriardanga, Balardanga and Udardanga. Locals demand a durable dam very soon.
Local farmer Abdul Gaffar said, “If this road goes into the river, we will have to leave our homes and live on the road.”
Crab trader Mosharraf said, “This road is being renovated and it is breaking down again. We are in a state of panic at night. If the road breaks down, we will have to beg and eat.”
Batiaghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Mostafizur Rahman said, I have heard about the matter. Appropriate measures will be taken after talking to the concerned Water Development Board.
Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Md. Ashraful Alam said, “We have been informed about this river erosion. Immediate measures will be taken.
