Pak keen to import jute products

Pakistan has expressed a strong interest in importing jute products from Bangladesh, citing significant demand for such items in the country.

During a meeting held on Wednesday at the Secretariat with the Adviser to the interim government for the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry, Farida Akhtar, the Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Syed Ahmed Maroof, made the remarks.

The Adviser, Farida Akhtar, outlined various initiatives undertaken by her ministry as part of ongoing reform programmes. Both officials discussed a range of bilateral interests, including cooperation in the field of fisheries, livestock, and the iconic Hilsha fish. High Commissioner Maroof conveyed Pakistan’s eagerness to expand collaboration in research and the development of the fisheries sector. He further expressed interest in enhancing bilateral efforts to ensure the production of safe fish, meat, and agricultural products.

During the discussion, Syed Ahmed Maroof emphasised Pakistan’s desire to import jute and jute products from Bangladesh, noting the substantial demand for these products within his country. In addition to trade, the resumption of direct flights between Pakistan and Bangladesh was also a key topic.

In a separate meeting with Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Tuesday, High Commissioner Maroof reiterated Pakistan’s interest in reinstating direct air routes, aiming to strengthen trade and economic relations between the two nations.

Both sides expressed their commitment to work closely towards advancing mutual cooperation in fisheries, livestock, and agricultural sectors, as well as promoting smoother trade links through direct flights.
