A record-breaking sum of Tk. 12 Crore 9 lakh 37,220 was found in the donation boxes of the historic Pagla Masjid in Kishoreganj after a daylong counting on Saturday, marking the highest amount ever collected in the mosque’s history.
The previous highest, Tk. 9.18 Crore was recorded on 12 April this year.
The authorities have collected at least 32 sacks of cash from 13 donation boxes of the historic Pagla mosque, after 4 months 18 days since the last count.
The donation boxes were opened on Saturday morning at 7.am in the presence of Deputy Commissioner (DC) alao Joint Secretary Fouzia Khan, Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury Bpm, ADC(General) MizabeRahmat, Sadar UNO Kamrul Hasan Maruf.
Counting began at 7am and continued till 7.30 pm, spanning 12.30 hours.
About 300 madrasa students, 80 Rupali Bank limited staff and around 500 others — including mosque management committee members, law enforcement, and Army personnel were involved in the counting process.
According to the mosque committee, a tk.130 crore mega project has been planned to build a ten -storeyPagla Mosque, and Islamic Complex accommodate half million worshippers, including prayer space for 5000 women.
DC, also Pagla Mosque managing committee president Fouzia Khan said all the money was later deposited in the Kishoreganj branch of Rupali Bank limited, while the foreign currencies and gold ornaments found in the donation boxes were secured in the District Collectorate Treasury.
Located on the bank of the Narsunda River in the Harua area, Pagla Masjid’s donation boxes are usually opened every three to four months, said mosque officials. This time, they were opened slightly later than usual-and again yielded a record amount.
SP of Kishoreganj, Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury BPM said police ensured full security from the time the boxes were opened, through the transfer and counting, to the safe deposit of the money in the bank. Law enforcement members also guard the donation boxes during other times.
Later, Pagla Mosque also donates to local madrasa, mosque, Orphanages, and patients with complex illness.
