Business Desk :

The Bangladesh Bridge Authority has officially launched a cashless, collector-free Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system on the Padma Bridge, enabling vehicles to cross the country’s largest bridge without stopping for toll payments.

The new system, described by the Bridge Division as a major step in Bangladesh’s digital transformation, allows drivers to pay tolls quickly, safely, and transparently using mobile apps.

Currently, toll payments are possible through bKash, Trust Bank’s TAP app, and Midland Bank’s mobile app.

To use the system, vehicle owners must register their vehicles via the bKash app by entering the vehicle number and the last four digits of the chassis number.

After registration, an Ekpass ID is sent via SMS, which can be used to top up the account using the “D-Toll Top-Up” service. The BRTA-approved RFID tag is verified during the first trip at the registration booth near Mawa Toll Plaza.

Once registered, vehicles can cross the ETC lane at speeds of up to 30 km/h without stopping.

The live pilot phase began on 15 September through Trust Bank’s TAP app. So far, 1,814 vehicles have used the system, generating around Tk3,491,700 in toll collections.

Officials say the system will reduce time, fuel consumption, and human resource inefficiencies at toll plazas.

The government plans to expand the service to more financial apps in the coming months, coordinated by the a2i program under the ICT Division.

Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, said the initiative marks a significant step toward a Smart and Digital Bangladesh, making toll payments faster and more transparent for all Padma Bridge users.
