Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Md. Tajul Islam, has announced that efforts are underway to gather accurate data on the mass killings that occurred during the July-August student protests.

Letters are being dispatched to media houses, hospitals, civil surgeons, deputy commissioners (DCs), and police superintendents (SPs) to compile detailed information on the deaths, which took place under the previous government’s orders during the 36-day movement marked by violence and alleged state-sponsored repression.

“We have visited hospitals to collect data on the July-August genocide, and letters are being sent to cemetery management authorities for further information.

This effort will continue until we gather all the necessary details,” Tajul Islam told reporters.

He highlighted that students are crucial witnesses to the events that unfolded during the protests. “We are working to engage with the coordinators of the student movement to understand the full scope of what happened,” he added.

Government estimates indicate that over 800 people were killed by law enforcement forces and Awami League party cadres during the protests, although the actual death toll is suspected to be higher.

Thousands more are currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the unrest.

Tajul Islam condemned the killings as an international crime and confirmed that the July-August massacre will be prosecuted by the ICT.

The Chief Prosecutor also addressed concerns regarding the ICT’s preparedness for the upcoming trials, particularly concerning the tribunal’s facilities.

“The current environment of the International Crimes Tribunal is not adequate for the trial of high-profile accused.

Moreover, we anticipate visits from foreign delegates for observation once the trial begins. Therefore, the old tribunal building urgently needs repair and renovation,” he said.

Tajul Islam called for cooperation from all sectors of society, urging individuals and institutions to provide authentic information regarding the killings.

“We are committed to establishing justice by maintaining international standards and ensuring transparency throughout the trial.

We encourage everyone to step forward and support this pursuit of justice,” he concluded.
