Sylhet Bureau :
A hospital outsourcing worker was killed when a water tank’s casting collapsed in the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital area.
The deceased, Sumon, was working in outsourcing in ward number 35 of Osmani. The accident occurred at Osmani Medical College Hospital on Monday afternoon.
According to sources from an outsourcing worker working in Osmani, Sumon sat in a tong shop under the water tank of the hospital’s PWD building after finishing his night duty to have morning tea.
At that time, a pillar casting of the tank collapsed on him. He was seriously injured. Although his colleagues took him to the emergency department for immediate treatment, the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Expressing anger over Sumon’s death, Osmani’s outsourcing workers went on a one-hour strike to protest the incident and demand punishment for the culprits. After protesting in the hospital premises in the afternoon, their colleagues blocked the road adjacent to the hospital in protest.
The outsourcing workers alleged that although various facilities of the hospital have been in a risky state for a long time, the authorities have not taken any initiative to repair or renovate them. This resulted in the death of a colleague.
They also said that Sumon Ahmed’s death was not a mere accident, but a tragic incident due to negligence. They demanded that those responsible be brought to justice with a speedy investigation and that the risky infrastructure of the hospital be renovated.
The police recovered Sumon’s body and sent it to the Osmani Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Meanwhile, the public suffered from traffic congestion during the blockade on the road. Later, the outsourcing workers withdrew from the blockade with the intervention of the police.
