Organisational strength crucial for change: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said that anyone aspiring to bring about a revolution, transform society, and improve the lives of ordinary people must first build a strong organization.

“Those who want real change, who dream of a revolution and of uplifting common people, must strengthen their organization and make it more effective,” he said.

He made these remarks while speaking at a memorial program for the late leftist politician and writer Badruddin Umar at the Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy in Dhaka.

Badruddin Umar, president of the Jatiya Mukti Council, passed away on September 7 at the age of 93 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.

Highlighting the importance of organizational strength, Fakhrul said, “What has been repeatedly emphasized in today’s discussion is the role of organization. From my personal experience, I firmly believe a revolution can only succeed when backed by a strong organization.

Much of today’s frustration stems from a lack of organized leadership. Without a revolutionary organization, no revolution is possible.”

Reflecting on Umar’s life, Fakhrul said, “I did not have many opportunities to interact with Comrade Badruddin Umar, but I once had a long discussion with him at the residence of interim government adviser Professor Dr. CR Abrar. Umar never compromised on his ideals and struggles till his last breath.

Those of us in politics today deeply respect him because of his unwavering principles. I wonder, however, how much the new generation has been able to learn from him.”

The commemoration began with a minute’s silence in memory of Umar. The Internationale was performed, followed by the screening of a documentary on his life and works.

The memorial was organized by the Badruddin Umar Shoksabha Jatiya Committee, with convener and Jatiya Mukti Council secretary Faiezul Hakim presiding over the event.

Prominent politicians, academics, and professionals also took part in the program.
