International Desk :

Less than 15 months into Narendra Modi’s third term as India’s Prime Minister, opposition parties are calling for his resignation, alleging that the 2024 general election was conducted using a flawed voter list.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the government of removing legitimate voters and adding fictitious names, claiming Home Minister Amit Shah and the Election Commission facilitated the process. Gandhi has also blamed the “Gujarat model” of vote manipulation, allegedly developed when Modi was Gujarat’s Chief Minister and replicated nationally in 2014.

Trinamool Congress, DMK, RJD, and other opposition parties have backed Gandhi’s claims, with Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee demanding that Modi and his cabinet resign and the Lok Sabha be dissolved.

The BJP has rejected the allegations. Spokespersons highlighted that Modi’s tenure as Gujarat CM coincided with Congress-led central governments, which appointed the Election Commissioners. The current Election Commission has also declared it will not investigate Gandhi’s claims, noting he failed to submit a supporting affidavit by the stipulated deadline.

Meanwhile, the voter list revision process (Special Intensive Revision or SIR) continues, with over 6.5 million names already removed in Bihar ahead of state elections in November. Opposition leaders argue that discrepancies in voter lists across states raise serious questions about the legitimacy of Modi’s government.
