BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the country’s progress depends on holding timely elections. Expressing hope that the interim government will conduct polls by February, he stressed that only elections can guide Bangladesh onto the right path.
Fakhrul made the comments on Monday morning after visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet, where he arrived with senior party leaders. Local BNP leaders welcomed them at Osmani International Airport around 9:30 am.
Speaking to journalists, Fakhrul urged BNP leaders and activists to begin preparing for the election by earning people’s trust and avoiding internal conflict. “We must create an atmosphere where the public sees BNP as their only hope,” he said during a doa mahfil later in the day, organized by Sylhet City Unit BNP.
He called on party members to act responsibly and avoid unethical practices like land grabbing or extortion. Citing years of struggle and sacrifice by BNP activists, Fakhrul reaffirmed the party’s vision of building a just and oppression-free Bangladesh.
Thanking Chief Adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus for proposing mid-February for elections, Fakhrul emphasized unity within the party and following the ideals of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. “Our victory is inevitable if we remain united,” he added.
He also warned that any delay in holding the polls would harm the country—causing a decline in investment, job opportunities, and public safety, while worsening law and order.
Fakhrul concluded by stressing that only a government elected with the people’s mandate can ensure lasting peace, stability, and progress.
