BRUR Correspondent :
Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) studies about 8,000 students in 22 departments. There are about 4,000 female students. On the other hand, there are only four doctors in the medical center. There is no gynecologist in the university medical center for this large number of female students. As a result, students are taking services from outside at an additional cost.
It is known from the field that the medical system of Berobi Medical Center is limited to the primary level. There are only 4 doctors and 1 nurse. On the other hand, the number of teachers, students, officers and employees receiving services is about 9,000 in total.
Except for a few, most of the students come from outside the Rangpur division. Most of these students are dependent on the university’s medical center. However, even after 17 years of its establishment, general students complain that the quality of service at the medical center is not satisfactory.
According to the World Health Organization, there should be 1 doctor for every 1,000 population and 3 nurses for every 1 doctor. But 1 doctor provides services to 2,250 people at the Begum Rokeya University Medical Center.
Several students said that due to the lack of modern equipment for diagnosing diseases, they have to go to outside clinics for tests. Medical services are being disrupted due to lack of financial solvency. In addition, garbage is scattered due to the shortage of sweepers. In this situation, there is no shortage of complaints from students about the quality of medical services.
They also complained that medical services are provided from 9 am to 5 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, in addition to being closed, which is very sad. Even for proper treatment, there are not enough doctors, no consultants. Which is very unpleasant for the medical services of a university. Even if a student is in an emergency, he has to be taken to Rangpur Government Medical College Hospital, 5 kilometers away, due to the lack of bed facilities.
The students demanded that the medical center be kept open on Fridays and Saturdays and that 24-hour service be ensured. Moreover, the students demanded the authorities to appoint enough doctors to eliminate the doctor crisis. They especially emphasized the importance of appointing specialist doctors. Moreover, observing the benefits of using modern equipment in the medical field, they demanded modernization of equipment in the medical center.
Shahriar, a student of the political science department, said, although there is a medical center on the campus, many students have various complaints about the quality of service. But have they found a way to solve their problems? When you are seriously ill, when you go there, you will see that two medicines are given by the medical center, and two medicines have to be purchased from outside. So I would say that the university administration should pay attention to the medical center. Keep track of whether we are getting proper treatment or not, and at the same time provide adequate medicines.
The students urged the BRUR administration to improve the medical system of the university medical center and transfer it from the primary level to the secondary level.
A student of the Bengla department, who requested anonymity, said, every girl suffers from various complications during her period. A gynecologist is essential for treating these problems. But there is no gynecologist in our university medical center. As a result, we are being deprived of medical services even after paying medical fees. And those who cannot afford it cannot get treatment outside.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer (Dental Surgeon) Dr. A. M. M. Shahriar said, the medical system of BRUR Medical Center is at the primary level, so we are satisfied with the service we can provide. But since 16 years have passed since its establishment, it is necessary to provide secondary level treatment at present. But there are only 4 doctors for 9000 service recipients. Which is the main obstacle in the way of providing good treatment. Moreover, like big universities like DU, JU, RU, etc., if our university’s medical center is to provide secondary level treatment, a separate building for the medical center as well as secondary level medical equipment is required. My expectation from the Bangladesh government and Berobi administration is to ensure good treatment for the students by eliminating all the crises of the medical center.
