The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has mandated online submission of income tax returns for all individual taxpayers across Bangladesh from the 2025-2026 assessment years.

The move is part of the NBR’s broader effort to streamline tax administration, enhance compliance, and reduce paperwork through an automated e-filing system.

Taxpayers must now submit their returns via the dedicated portal, www.etaxnbr.gov.bd, starting from 4 August 2025.
However, the NBR has exempted certain categories from this requirement.

Individuals aged 65 or older, persons with physical disabilities or special needs (upon submission of a valid medical certificate), expatriate taxpayers, and legal representatives of deceased taxpayers are allowed to submit paper returns if they prefer.

Despite the exemption, these groups may also choose to file online voluntarily.

The NBR has further clarified that any individual facing technical difficulties in accessing or registering on the e-return platform may seek permission to file a manual return.

Such taxpayers must submit a written application with relevant justification to the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Taxes by 31 October 2025. If approved by the respective Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes, paper-based submissions will be accepted.

This nationwide rollout follows the successful pilot implementation last year, which made online return filing compulsory for government officials in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur city corporations, as well as employees in banking, telecom, and five multinational companies.

Officials expect the initiative to significantly improve efficiency, broaden the tax base, and reduce instances of evasion, aligning Bangladesh with global best practices in tax administration.
