Numerous fraudulent schemes are proliferating on social media, promising easy income from home.

These scams have led to significant financial losses for many individuals, pushing some into bankruptcy.

Law enforcement agencies are beefing up their cybercrime units to combat these fraud rings, but progress in apprehending the culprits remains limited.

Experts stress the importance of public awareness in avoiding these enticing yet deceitful online offers.

It’s crucial for ordinary people to exercise caution and skepticism when encountering such schemes to protect themselves from financial harm.
It’s becoming increasingly common on social media platforms like Facebook to encounter messages promising easy money or high-paying foreign jobs.

Unfortunately, these are often scams perpetrated by fraudsters.
Delowar Hossain, working in Dhaka, fell victim to such a scheme. Initially enticed by the promise of online income, he earned a modest amount by completing simple tasks. However, as he became more involved, he borrowed money and eventually lost a total of 28,000 taka to the fraudsters.

Delowar’s experience is not unique; many others have also suffered financial and social repercussions after falling into similar traps.
Despite the recent surge in cyber fraud allegations, law enforcement
agencies have yet to identify any perpetrators.

Police are advising the public to resist the allure of quick gains.
Professor Dr. Sharia Afrin, Chairman of the Criminology Department at the University of Dhaka, emphasized the escalating nature of these crimes, attributing their rise to modern technology and globalization.

She noted, “Lack of public awareness and insufficient officials allow cyber crimes to proliferate across the country.”

Dr. Afrin urged the government to prioritize adequate staffing and modern technology to combat these issues.

Al Kibria, Deputy Commissioner of the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), highlighted the transnational nature of cybercrime, often originating from outside the country.

He explained, “There are legal complexities in extraditing suspects, making public awareness and restraint crucial. People must control their greed.”

Cyber experts urged to increase the capacity of law enforcement agencies and public awareness to prevent fraud.
