Business Report :
The price of locally produced onions in Dhaka has surged past Tk100 per kilogram, with retail rates now ranging between Tk100 and Tk105 in different parts of the capital.
Data from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) shows that today, local onion prices in Dhaka ranged from Tk95 to Tk105 per kg.
Just two days ago, the price was around Tk90 per kg, meaning shoppers are facing an increase of Tk10-15 within only 48 hours.
Traders said the price hike in major onion-producing districts is affecting markets in the capital.
Explaining the rise, Shyambazar wholesale trader Rafiq Alam told the New Nation, “Prices were stable when local supply was good. But now, supplies from wholesale hubs have decreased, pushing prices up.”
A visit to Shyambazar market found local and hybrid onions selling at Tk94 per kg, up from Tk84 the previous day a Tk10 jump in just 24 hours.
Many customers are struggling with the sudden increase. Shopper Kamal Hossain said, “The price jumped so quickly that buying onions now costs much more. It’s getting harder for ordinary people to afford daily groceries.”
Chattogram Sees Similar Surge Onion prices have also crossed Tk100 per kg in Chattogram’s Chaktai-Khatunganj wholesale market, rising by Tk20-25 in just two days.
Locally grown onions were sold for Tk90-105 per kg today, compared to Tk72-85 per kg at the end of October.
Idris Rahman, general secretary of the Khatunganj Market Traders Association, said, “There is a shortage in supply. With imports reduced and the local harvest over, stock levels have dropped, leading to higher wholesale prices.”
Market sources added that the suspension of Indian onion imports has tightened supply, contributing to price volatility.
