SCHOOLBOY MURDER: One to die, 7 get life

In the murder case of Sumel Mia, a school student in Bishwanath, Sylhet district, eight accused have been sentenced to death, seven to life imprisonment, and 17 to two years of rigorous imprisonment.

Judge Syeda Amina Farhin, acting judge of the 3rd Additional District and Sessions Judge Court of Sylhet, announced the verdict on Wednesday (July 30).

Al Amin Rana, Bench Assistant (Presenter) of this court, confirmed this information.
He said that out of the 34 accused in the case, the judge has ordered the death penalty for 8, life imprisonment for 7 and two years imprisonment for 17. Of them, 31 are in prison. Only Mamunur Rashid, who was sentenced to two years, is absconding.

The death row convicts are Saiful Alam (44), son of the late Aftab Ali of Islampur village in Bishwanath upazila, his brother Nazrul Alam (41), Chadrul alias Sadar Alam (43), Siraj Uddin (47), son of the late Manohar Ali of Chaitanyanagar village in the same upazila, Jamal Mia (49), son of the late Firoz Ali of Bhatipara, Shahin Uddin (42), son of Shafiq Ali of Nayagaon, Abdul Jalil (49), son of the late Abdul Jabbar of Ganghutia village, and Anwar Hossain, son of the late Moin Uddin of Paschim Ghargarikandi village.

Those sentenced to 2 years are: Lutfur, Mayur, Manunur Rashid (absconding), Kawsar, Dilafar, Parvez7, Wahid, Dilawar, Azad, Muktar, Rakib, Angur, Javed, Shafiq, Makhlis, Firoz and Fakhr Uddin.

Citing the case, court sources said that on May 1, 2021, Sumel Ahmed (18), a 10th grade student of Shahjalal High School, was brutally shot dead in Chauldhani Haor of Bishwanath Upazila due to a previous dispute.
