One of Three Missing Girls Found in Tangail

One of the three girls who went missing while bathing in the Dhaleshwari River in Tangail has been found dead. The other two remain missing as of the time of reporting.

According to police and locals, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Ghosh Para area under Katuli Union in Tangail Sadar upazila. The three girls went missing while bathing in the river.

After hours of search, the Fire Service recovered the body of Monira Akter (12) on Saturday evening. She was a fifth-grade student. The two missing girls have been identified as Achiya Akter (12) and Mafia Akter (10) — daughters of expatriate Borhan Uddin from Sonamaizal village under Mahmudnagar Union in the same upazila. Both were madrasa students. The tragic incident has cast a shadow of grief over the entire locality.

On Sunday, BNP’s publicity secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku visited the site and met with the bereaved families to express his condolences.

According to the Fire Service and eyewitnesses, the three girls had come to attend a cousin’s wedding feast in Ghosh Para area on Thursday. On Saturday afternoon, they went out saying they were going to a shop, but instead went to bathe in the river. All three were swept away by the current.

The Tangail Fire Service diving team initiated a rescue operation promptly upon being notified. As of the filing of this report, the search operation is still ongoing for the two missing girls.
