An elderly man died and 17 others were injured in a fire that broke out at a furniture shop in Dhaka’s Bangshal area early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Amin Uddim, 65, who died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), reportedly from smoke inhalation.

According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), the fire started at around 4:10am on the ground floor of a five-storey building at Makrosha Bazar on Nazimuddin Road. The upper floors were residential.

Seven fire engines from Siddiqbazar and Lalbagh fire stations rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control by 4:50am, FSCD media officer Khairul Islam Rony said.

Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to the residential floors and rescued 18 people, who suffered injuries due to smoke suffocation. Of them, six were admitted to DMCH while the rest received treatment on the spot.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical short circuit. However, the extent of damage is yet to be determined, authorities said.
