The New Nation marks its 46th years of anniversary today. We have been doing journalism all through those years bringing to light the numerous problems of the people, particularly those at the grassroots.
The daily, the oldest English newspaper in Bangladesh, has been telling the stories of people and the causes they fight for. We are also committed to providing readers with unbiased and undiluted information about the happenings at home and abroad. We always try to remain true to our commitment.
As we all know, when a truth is revealed, it turns against someone or the other. So, revealing the truth is always a difficult task. Since it is not in favour of the vested interests, revealing the truth has always been more or less risky. Although the risks of revealing the truth are relatively low in countries that practice democracy, it is not so ease in our context.
This newspaper, during its 45 years of publication, has tried to be a true conscience-keeper of the society. However, during the last 15 and half years of the rule of fascist Sheikh Hasina, revealing the truth was very difficult. In spite of that, we under the guidance of the late Barrister Mainul Hosein, who was chairman of The New Nation’s Editorial Board, upheld this newspaper as a mouthpiece of the people defying all odds.
In celebration of the anniversary, we are full of honour to present to our valued readers and well-wishers a colourful and well-illustrated 32-page special supplement in addition to our today’s normal 20- page publication.
To publish a special edition, it covers over the course of a time — there are writers to be contacted, fundraisers to be organized, and edits to be completed. Then the pages are designed and proofed, headlines and captions written, final changes made and then the whole month’s work is sent to the printing press.
We are exultant to note that the contributors, who are experts, educationists, economists, scholars, researchers and academics, have done a commendable job in presenting us with very insightful and rich articles. The articles include politics and good governance; economy and finance; art and culture; human rights and international politics; healthcare; environment; and women empowerment.
Sincerely, we have tried to make the contents of the articles thought-provoking, objective, constructive, and positively directional, which we are confident will add value to the existing work on the topics covered in the supplement. This daily from the very beginning has been maintaining an editorial policy with the motto of covering all sorts of news stories without fear and favour. This independence stance has made this newspaper useful in ventilating people’s views and grievances.
Hopefully, also the contents of the articles focusing on various issues, including the July-August anti-discrimination movement of students, fall of the fascist Sheikh Hasina’s government, human interests, public sufferings, economics, literature, scientific breakthrough and politics, will win the hearts of its ardent readers.
During the long years of our journey we went through different upheavals marked by change from strict control to partial freedom in publishing the newspaper. But all through our commitment to democracy, good governance, journalistic objectivity remains firm. We assure our readers of our resolve to uphold the glorious tradition of this daily in future too.
We take the opportunity of expressing our gratitude to our valued readers, institutions provided advertisements and patrons, who have inspired us consistently and have shown keen interest in our continuing progress and lent unstinting support in fulfilling our objective. We are committed to take forward the pro-people policy of this daily despite challenges. We are committed to stand against injustice and discrimination.
