Noor Hossain Day today
BSS, Dhaka :The Shaheed (martyred) Noor Hossain Day will be observed in the country today.The day is observed on November 10 every year commemorating the supreme sacrifice of pro- democratic activist Noor Hossain, who laid down his life to overthrow the then autocratic regime of Hussein Muhammad Ershad. On this day in 1987, Noor Hossain, a leader of Juba League, was killed in police firing near Zero point in the city while participating in a pro-democracy procession. His death ultimately expedited the fall of Ershad regime and paved the way to restore democracy in the country. Bullets pierced through his chest when the young man joined the then Awami League led 15-party alliance rally inscribing a slogan ‘Swairachar Nipat Jak, Ganotantra Mukti Pak’ (Down with autocracy, let democracy be freed) on his chest and back. Different socio-political and cultural organizations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner. President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the day. In their messages, they recalled with deep respect the supreme sacrifice of Noor Hossain to restore democracy in the country. The President, in his message, said democracy was restored in the country in 1990 as a sequel to the supreme sacrifice made by Noor Hossain.”His blood did not go in vain,” he added. He expressed firm conviction that democracy would not be hampered in the country as long as courageous people like Noor Hossain would live on this land.The President urged the people to work together to give democracy an institutional shape. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the martyrdom of Noor Hossain had expedited the pro-democracy movement.Bangladesh got back the right to voting and bread through the sacrifice of Noor Hossain, Babul, Fattah and other martyrs, she said and prayed for eternal peace of their departed souls.
