Police obstructed a long march organised by non-MPO (Monthly Pay Order) teachers toward the Chief Adviser’s Office in Jamuna, prompting the protesters to block the road in front of the National Press Club once again on Tuesday afternoon (4 November).

Around 4 pm, hundreds of teachers gathered and occupied the street, chanting slogans demanding MPO inclusion and financial recognition from the government.

Traffic in the area came to a standstill for nearly an hour, causing severe congestion in nearby roads and intersections.

A six-member delegation from the Non-MPO Teachers’ Unity Alliance was later sent to the Chief Adviser’s Office to hold discussions with officials on behalf of the demonstrators.

As of 5 pm, the teachers were still occupying the street, awaiting the outcome of the talks.

Speaking to Jugantor, the organisation’s coordinator, Mizanul Haque Mamun, said, “Non-MPO teachers have long been deprived of salaries and allowances. We will not return home until our demand for MPO inclusion is fulfilled.”

Shahbagh Police Station Inspector (Patrol) Bulbul Ahmed told Jugantor that the teachers began their long march toward the Chief Adviser’s Office around 4 pm when police set up barricades to stop them.

“We have allowed a six-member delegation to go to the Chief Adviser’s Office for discussions. The teachers are now waiting for their representatives to return with a decision,” he said.

The teachers, who have been staging continuous demonstrations in Dhaka for weeks, reiterated that they would continue their movement until the government formally announces MPO benefits for all non-MPO educational institutions.
