Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu Saturday said the government would not allow any tannery industry at Hazaribagh after March.
“The government would shutdown all establishments at Hazaribagh if tannery industries are not shifted at Savar within the stipulated period,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar in the city.
Board of Investment (BoI) organsied the day-long seminar on “Leather and Leather Products: Prospective Industries after Readymade Garment” with its executive chairman Dr SA Samad in the chair.
Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam delivered his speech as the special guest, while lawmaker Dr Abdur Razzaque, chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR) M Nazibur Rahman, commerce secretary Hedayetullah Al-Mamun, executive member of BoI Navas Chandra Mondal and chairman of Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather goods, and Footwear Exporters Association Engineer Abu Taher spoke in the seminar.
“The tannery industries have been facing setback due to international conspiracies after the readymade garment,” the industries minister said.
He urged the owners of tannery industries to shift their factories within the stipulated period to Savar to overcome from the conspiracies, adding, “The government would not allow tannery industries at Hazaribagh after March for the national interest.”
Amu said around 60 percent construction work of the Leather Industries at Savar has been completed, while 152 layout plans out of 155 allotted plots were submitted for constriction of tannery factories.
Quamrul expected that all tannery factories will be shifted to Savar as the construction work is about to complete, adding, “No tannery industries will be allowed at Hazaribagh for saving Buriganga from pollution.”
