Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the overall situation in the country remains stable following the death sentences awarded to Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in the case concerning crimes against humanity during last year’s July-August mass uprising.

Speaking to reporters after a core committee meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, he said, “The public at large has reacted calmly to the verdict, indicating a prevailing sense of normalcy nationwide.”

According to the adviser, daily activities are continuing as usual, with no noticeable tension or disorder on the streets.

He admitted that a few isolated incidents had occurred, but stressed that these were minor and that no significant violence or disruption had taken place.

Jahangir Alam added that individuals attempting to explode crude bombs were swiftly apprehended by law enforcement agencies. Commenting on the matter of Hasina’s extradition, he said that another official communication would soon be sent regarding her return. He also urged caution over provocative statements coming from neighbouring countries, noting that Bangladesh must remain alert and exercise restraint.

The adviser called on students to focus on their academic responsibilities rather than gathering at Dhanmondi-32.

Earlier in the day, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in a case involving crimes against humanity during last year’s July-August mass uprising.

Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who provided testimony as a state witness, received a five-year prison sentence.

The three-member tribunal, led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, began pronouncing the verdict around 12:30pm, releasing a 453-page judgment. All three accused were found guilty on all charges.”
