Out of 158 primary and secondary educational institutions in Madhukhali Upazila of Faridpur, 111 do not have Shaheed Minar. The teachers and students of these educational institutions are deprived of the opportunity to pay respect to the martyrs with flowers on special days.
Students are not getting to know much about the historical importance and significance of the great language movement of the month of February, except for the linguistic studies. Teachers, students and parents have strongly demanded the installation of Shaheed Minar in the respective educational institutions. The teachers and students said that they have to pay their respects to the martyrs on various national days including the International Mother Language Day. Those concerned say that despite the desire, the construction of Shaheed Minar was not possible due to financial constraints.
Upazila primary education office sources said that there are 96 government primary schools. 75 of them do not have Shaheed Minar. On the other hand, according to the sources of secondary education office, there are 61 secondary and higher secondary educational institutions including 8 general and technical colleges, 12 madrasas, 42 secondary schools in the upazila. Among them, 36 institutions do not have Shaheed Minar. Due to the indifference of the concerned members including the teachers and managing committee members of the educational institutions, the Sudheejans feel that the Shaheed Minar has not been constructed in these educational institutions.
On the other hand, the institutions which have Shaheed Minar are also neglected after years. Many Sudhijans, on the condition of anonymity, said that although the presidents of various secondary education institutions spend lakhs of rupees on recruitment, if they spend a little money to preserve the memory of the language movement, it is possible to build the Shaheed Minar.
In this regard, Upazila Secondary Education Officer Abdul Awal Akon said that higher authorities had given instructions regarding the construction of Shaheed Minar in schools. We have prepared and sent the design. Shaheed Minar has been constructed in some institutions locally. The construction of Shaheed Minar requires direct government support.
