Staff Reporter :
The main opposition party, BNP, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday cautioned his party members against complacency over the US sanctions on former Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed.

“Many may be happy over the sanctions on Aziz… I think it’s misleading and we are always getting confused,” Fakhrul said at a discussion meeting at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in the capital.

The event was organized by the Jatiya Gonotantrik Party (Jagpa) to mark the seventh death anniversary of the party founder Shafiul Alam Prodhan.Fakhrul urged his party members to focus on unseating the Awami League government through their own efforts rather than relying on external factors.

“The US also imposed sanctions on RAB and the officers of the elite force and the police earlier but it could not stop the awful journey of the current regime,” he noted.

“We have to stand on our own feet, stand with our own strength, and defeat them with our own strength,” Fakhrul asserted.

The US Department of State imposed sanctions on Aziz Ahmed and his family members on Monday due to “his involvement in significant corruption.”

Fakhrul emphasized that the BNP and the global community have long been highlighting the Awami League government’s deep involvement in corruption. “They deny it and claim they don’t indulge in corruption.

Now, you see that the US has imposed sanctions on former Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed along with his family,” he remarked.

He explained that the sanctions on Aziz were due to corruption, influencing democratic institutions, and eroding public trust—issues the BNP has been raising for a long time.
