The Foreign Adviser, Md Touhid Hossain, has stated that India has not yet given an official response regarding the request to extradite the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who is currently under Delhi’s shelter.

He made this statement while attending the annual general meeting and reunion event organized by the Belabo Thana Association at Purbachal, the eastern part of the capital, on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, mentioned on Friday during a weekly press briefing that India has no new comments at the moment regarding Dhaka’s request to return Sheikh Hasina.

It is worth noting that Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 after being ousted in a student-led uprising.

She faces numerous criminal charges, including murder, genocide, and enforced disappearances.
Earlier, on December 23, Dhaka sent a diplomatic note to Delhi requesting her return for judicial proceedings.

Although India acknowledged the receipt of the note, it has not yet provided any response.

Earlier, on December 26, 2024, Adviser to the Interim Government Mahfuz Alam said that India has taken a political decision not to extradite Sheikh Hasina who is facing criminal charges
“We are hearing that they (India) have made a political decision not to return her (Sheikh Hasina),” he said in an event in the capital.

“We have informed the Indian government through a Note Verbale, seeking the return of Sheikh Hasina for judicial proceedings,” he said at that time.

With the fall of Sheikh Hasina government, the relation between Bangladesh and India is passing through some difficult time.

The Interim Government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus has been articulating pragmatic relations with India to move forward.

He is also urging India to rebuild the relations through the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC). However, India is still mum over the issue.
