Public health experts suggested fasting for diabetic patients in Ramadan is not harmful. The Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and Diabetologists of Bangladesh (ACEDB) have provided guidelines for diabetic patients on fasting safely during the holy month.

It cited the role of modern medical advancements behind keeping fasting manageable for individuals with diabetes.

During a press conference held in the capital on Friday, ACEDB President Professor Dr. Md Farid Uddin highlighted the importance of careful preparation and medical advice prior to fasting.

“Islam offers a comprehensive way of life, and acts of worship can be performed in alignment with proper guidelines. Diabetic patients can also fast safely by following specific recommendations,” he stated.

Professor Farid Uddin advised diabetic individuals to consult their physicians 2-3 months before Ramadan to devise an appropriate fasting plan.

Studies show that around 80% of diabetic patients in Bangladesh observe fasting during Ramadan, with nearly 50 million diabetics participating worldwide. However, complications such as hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), diabetic ketoacidosis, and dehydration frequently occur among those who fast without professional guidance.

To address these risks, the Endocrine Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University has launched nationwide campaigns to raise awareness about safe fasting practices. These initiatives include training sessions for doctors and patients, dialogues with mosque khatibs, and educational outreach through various media platforms.

Additionally, ACEDB designated the Islamic month of Rajab as “Diabetes and Ramadan Awareness Month” in October 2023 to stress the importance of safe fasting. The campaign, launched on January 27, 2023, at Dhaka Club, represents the first such global observance.

Throughout the month of Rajab, programs such as workshops, patient education sessions, and collaborations with religious leaders aim to promote awareness of diabetes management during Ramadan.
Experts reaffirmed that diabetes does not necessarily prevent fasting for individuals who take appropriate precautions and follow medical advice.
